THE NIGERIAN STOCK MARKET — A Complete Beginner’s Guide I’ve been getting tons of DMs asking how to start investing in Nigerian stocks. So I put together the most detailed thread you’ll ever read on this topic. Bookmark this. Share it. Your future self will thank you. 🧵👇

1. First, let’s talk about WHY you should care right now. The Nigerian Exchange (NGX) returned 51.19% in 2025, its best performance since 2007. Market cap went from ₦62.76 trillion to ₦99.4 trillion. In February 2026, it crossed ₦123.9 trillion and the All-Share Index hit 193,000 points — a record. This market is not playing.
2/32View on X
2. To put that 51% return in perspective: ∙ Nigerian savings accounts gave you about 4-6% ∙ Fixed deposits gave you about 15-20% ∙ Even treasury bills didn’t come close Meanwhile, the stock market almost doubled your money in 12 months. And the market still trades at just 8x price-to-earnings — emerging markets average 16.5x. Nigerian stocks are STILL undervalued.
3/32View on X
3. So what exactly IS the stock market? Simple: It’s a marketplace where you buy and sell small pieces of companies. When you buy a share of Dangote Cement, you literally own a tiny piece of Dangote Cement. If the company makes money, you make money — through: → Dividends (your share of profits) → Capital gains (stock price goes up, you sell higher) → Bonus shares (free extra shares)
4/32View on X
4. Nigeria’s stock exchange is called the NGX — Nigerian Exchange Limited. It used to be called the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE). Same thing, just rebranded. Over 148 companies are listed there — banks, telecoms, cement companies, breweries, oil companies, consumer goods firms, and more. Trading happens Monday to Friday, 10:15am to 2:30pm.
5/32View on X
5. Before we go further, learn these terms: → NGX All-Share Index (ASI): Tracks the overall market performance. If it goes up, the market is generally doing well. → Market Cap: Total value of a company’s shares. MTN Nigeria’s market cap is ₦16.4 trillion — the highest on NGX. → P/E Ratio: Price-to-Earnings. Tells you how “expensive” a stock is relative to its earnings. Lower = potentially cheaper. → Dividend Yield: How much dividend you get as a % of what you paid. Higher yield = more cash in your pocket.
6/32View on X
6. More terms you need: CHN (Clearing House Number): Your unique ID in the stock market — like BVN but for stocks. You only get one. → CSCS: Central Securities Clearing System. They hold all your shares electronically and track who owns what. → Stockbroker: The middleman between you and the market. You can’t buy stocks directly — you need a broker. → T+2 Settlement: After you buy or sell, it takes 2 business days for the transaction to fully settle.
7/32View on X
7. HOW TO START INVESTING (Step by Step): Step 1: Choose a stockbroker or investment app You CANNOT buy stocks directly. You need a licensed broker or platform. Here are your options: TRADITIONAL BROKERS: ∙ Stanbic IBTC Stockbrokers ∙ CSL Stockbrokers (FCMB) ∙@MeristemNigeria (MeriTrade app) ∙ @Afrinvest (Optimus app) ∙ @ChapelHillNg ∙ @CardinalStoneNG DIGITAL PLATFORMS: ∙ @investbamboo ∙ @Risevest ∙ @trovefinance
8/32View on X
8. Quick breakdown of the digital platforms: @investbamboo ∙ 500,000+ registered users ∙ Access to Nigerian and US stocks ∙ 1.5% commission on US trades ∙ SEC regulated ∙ Fractional shares available ∙ Start with as little as ₦1,000 @trovefinance ∙ Nigerian, US, Chinese stocks, ETFs, bonds ∙ 1.5% commission ∙ Start from ₦1,000 or $10 ∙ Has “Trove University” for learning ∙ SEC regulated
9/32View on X
9. Step 2: Open your account What you’ll need: ✅ Valid ID (National ID, Passport, Driver’s License, or PVC) ✅ Proof of address (utility bill, not older than 3 months) ✅ Passport photograph ✅ BVN ✅ Bank account details Most platforms let you do everything online now. Within 24-48 hours, your broker will: ∙ Open your stockbroking account ∙ Register you with CSCS ∙ Give you your CHN (Clearing House Number) Keep that CHN safe. It’s your identity in the market.
10/32View on X
10. Step 3: Fund your account and start buying Transfer money from your bank to your brokerage account. Then either: → Tell your broker what to buy (traditional) → Use the app to buy yourself (digital platforms) There’s no official minimum to invest. Some platforms let you start with ₦1,000. Pro tip: Start small. Learn the process. Then scale up.

11. Now let’s talk about the sectors on the NGX. BANKING — The backbone. 9 banks are in the trillion-naira club. Banks profit from interest rates, loans, and FX trading. TELECOMS — MTN and Airtel dominate. Data demand is only going up. CEMENT/INDUSTRIAL — Dangote Cement, BUA Cement, Lafarge. Infrastructure spending = more cement demand. CONSUMER GOODS — Nestlé, Nigerian Breweries, BUA Foods, Cadbury, NASCON. Everyday products Nigerians buy. OIL & GAS — Seplat Energy, Aradel, TotalEnergies. Nigeria is still an oil economy. AGRICULTURE — Presco, Okomu Oil. Cocoa and palm oil are booming exports. INSURANCE — Fastest growing sector in 2025. Still cheap.
12/32View on X
12. THE BLUE CHIPS — stocks every beginner should know: These are the biggest, most stable companies on the NGX. They’ve been around for decades and pay consistent dividends. 1. DANGOTE CEMENT (DANGCEM) — ₦13.5 trillion market cap. Africa’s largest cement producer. Export growth under AfCFTA. Pays dividends. 2. MTN NIGERIA (MTNN) — ₦16.4 trillion. Most valuable company on NGX. Revenue grew 54% YoY. Data demand is a long-term tailwind. 3. BUA FOODS (BUAFOODS) — ₦15.2 trillion. One of the fastest-growing consumer brands in Africa. Sugar, flour, pasta, rice.
13/32View on X
13. More Blue Chips 4. GTCO (Guaranty Trust Holding Co) — ₦4.28 trillion. The most capitalized bank on NGX. 8.6% dividend yield. Consistently profitable. Innovation-driven. 5. ZENITH BANK — ₦3.49 trillion. One of Nigeria’s strongest banks. Has distributed ₦2.4 trillion to shareholders over time. Rock solid. 6. AIRTEL AFRICA — ₦8.53 trillion. Cross-border telecom play across Africa. Foreign currency earnings buffer against naira risk. 7. BUA CEMENT — ₦7.11 trillion. Second largest cement company. Expanding capacity aggressively.
14/32View on X
14. GROWTH STOCKS — higher risk, higher reward: 8. SEPLAT ENERGY — Nigeria’s leading independent oil & gas company. Revenue up 12%. Focused on gas expansion. One of the top performers in 2026 so far. 9. LAFARGE AFRICA — Up 15.99% YTD in 2026. Revenue grew 62.77% YoY. The most efficient cement company right now. 10.PRESCO PLC — ₦2.7 trillion. Palm oil giant. Benefits from global edible oil pricing. Pays interim and final dividends.
15/32View on X
15. VALUE & DIVIDEND PLAYS: 11.UBA (United Bank for Africa) — ₦2.12 trillion. Largest Pan-African bank network. Present in 20+ African countries. Chairman Tony Elumelu confirmed recapitalization target met. 12.OKOMU OIL — ₦1.39 trillion. Agriculture play with export potential. Hard-currency earnings hedge against naira weakness. 13.NASCON ALLIED — Dangote Group subsidiary. Salt, seasonings, daily essentials. P/E ratio of just 7.7x vs sector average of 13.7x. Cheap. 14.FBN HOLDINGS — ₦2.31 trillion. One of Nigeria’s oldest financial institutions. Benefiting massively from bank recapitalization.
16/32View on X
16. DIVIDEND STOCKS — for those who want regular cash: Several NGX companies pay reliable dividends. Some pay interim + final dividends (twice a year). Seplat even pays quarterly. Top dividend payers include: → GTCO — ₦8.03 per share historically → Dangote Cement — 7.40% yield → Zenith Bank — consistent payouts → Seplat Energy — quarterly dividends → Presco — interim + final dividends → Okomu Oil — interim + final dividends Remember: Dividends are taxed at 10% WHT (Withholding Tax), deducted at source. You receive the net amount.
17/32View on X
17. TAXES AND FEES — what actually comes out of your pocket: GOOD NEWS: There is NO capital gains tax on stock sales in Nigeria (unless total proceeds exceed ₦150 million/year). This makes the NGX one of the most tax-friendly markets in the world for equity investors. FEES: → Broker commission: 0.5% to 1.5% per trade (varies by platform) → SEC fee: 0.3% of transaction value → NGX fee: 0.3% of transaction value → CSCS fee: 0.3% of transaction value → Stamp duty: 0.075% Total transaction cost is roughly 1.5% to 3% round trip. Not bad at all.
18/32View on X
18. COMMON BEGINNER MISTAKES — avoid these: - Buying based on “hot tips” from WhatsApp groups without doing your own research. - Putting ALL your money in one stock. Diversify across at least 3-5 sectors. - Panic selling when the market dips. The market dropped mid-2025 and still finished +51% for the year. - Ignoring fundamentals. A stock going up 300% doesn’t mean it’s a good buy NOW. Check P/E, earnings, debt levels. - Not having an emergency fund BEFORE investing. Never invest money you might need in 3-6 months. - Trading too frequently. Transaction costs eat into your returns. The best investors buy and hold quality companies.
19/32View on X
19. HOW TO ANALYZE A STOCK (Simplified): Before buying any stock, check these 5 things: 1. EARNINGS — Is the company making money? Are earnings growing year over year? 2. P/E RATIO — Is the stock cheap or expensive relative to its earnings? Compare to the sector average. 3. DIVIDEND HISTORY — Does the company pay dividends? Have they been consistent? 4. DEBT — How much does the company owe? Heavy debt in a high interest rate environment is risky. 5. MANAGEMENT — Who’s running the show? Companies with strong, transparent management tend to outperform. You can find this info on platforms like NGX website, Nairametrics, Proshare, and your broker’s research reports.
20/32View on X
20. SAMPLE BEGINNER PORTFOLIO (₦500,000): If I were starting fresh today with ₦500K, here’s how I’d split it: → 30% Banking (₦150K) — Split between GTCO and Zenith. → 20% Telecoms (₦100K) — MTN Nigeria. → 20% Industrial (₦100K) — Dangote Cement or Lafarge. → 15% Consumer Goods (₦75K) — BUA Foods or NASCON. → 15% Oil/Agric (₦75K) — Seplat or Okomu Oil. This gives you exposure to 4-5 sectors, mixes growth and dividend stocks, and doesn’t put all eggs in one basket. Adjust based on YOUR risk tolerance.
21/32View on X
21. WHAT IF I ONLY HAVE ₦50,000? That’s perfectly fine. Here’s what you can do: → Open an account on Trove, Bamboo, or Chaka (they accept small amounts). → Buy shares of 2-3 companies you believe in. → Set up a monthly investing habit — even ₦10,000/month adds up. → Let dividends compound In 2025, over 45 companies on the NGX returned more than 100%. Some returned over 1,000%. The point is: START. You don’t need millions

Learn. Then invest. In that order.
23/32View on X
23. WHY THE MARKET IS BULLISH IN 2026: 1. Naira reforms — FX market is more transparent. Companies report real earnings now. 2. Fuel subsidy removal — painful but structurally positive long term. 3. Bank recapitalization — banks are raising capital, getting stronger. 16 banks already met CBN requirements. 4. Declining inflation — dropped from 33.88% in Oct 2024 to around 14-16% by late 2025. 5. Foreign investor return — foreign portfolio investment surged 172% YoY. 6. AfCFTA — companies like Dangote and BUA are exporting across Africa. 7. Dividend declarations — NGX companies declared ₦1.1 trillion in dividends in 2025.
24/32View on X
24. BUT — here are the RISKS: → The market can go down. 2025 was exceptional. Don’t expect 51% every year. → Naira volatility can eat into real returns, especially if you’re measuring in dollar terms. → Regulation changes. CBN or SEC policy shifts can move the market overnight. → Global headwinds. If oil crashes or global markets tank, Nigeria feels it. → Liquidity risk. Some smaller stocks are hard to sell quickly without taking a loss. → Company-specific risks. Bad management, fraud, or sector downturns happen. This is why you diversify and never invest money you can’t afford to lose.
25/32View on X
25. THE LONG GAME: Nigeria’s stock market has returned: → 37.65% in 2024 → 45.90% in 2023 → 51.19% in 2025 Three consecutive years of massive gains. But even if you’d invested during the crash years, you’d still be up big today because quality companies recover. The NGX All-Share Index was 26,842 at start of 2020. Today it’s over 193,000. That’s 7x in 6 years. Time in the market beats timing the market. Every time.

Buy your first share of a blue chip (GTCO, Dangote Cement, or MTN) 5. Follow @TomolaGroup and @Nairametrics for daily updates 6. Set up a monthly investment plan — consistency is everything 7. Don’t touch it for at least 12 months That’s it. You’re now an investor.

This is needed. Too many of us hear “invest in stocks” but nobody explains how to actually start. If you’ve broken it down properly, you’re doing God’s work for real. Financial literacy is how we stop guessing and start building.
It took a lot for me to put together but hopefully people use the opportunity well
